Village Meeting notes19 July 01
Okay, 37 days and the village has begun! We have materials for the communal showers at the Orange house
and construction starts tonight. The dome for Discovery is under construction, the main stage has most
of it's components ready, and materials for the Mind Control tower are being gathered. In order to
save waste materials, the specifics of the arches have been changed a bit (smaller) and the artistic
aspects of them have been confirmed to be up to the individual camps. However, to help with their
constructions, we're having a mass arch construction party next weekend where the frames will be built
so that they're ready for customization by each camp.
We did some calculations at this meeting and realized that over 700 people could be dancing in our village
circle, and with the main stage bumping each night, this could be the party center of Burning Man 2k1!
So let's get going.
Camps at this meeting:
1) Mind control, Backstage-Time-Space, Crack Out, and Discovery camps were represented,
new people showed up too.
2) Camp Church will not be happening, Sammy has combined with Crackout.
3) Mind Control may be spinning off a second camp to help fill the slot opened by church (Camp Teepee?)
4) Dream Theatre may not be joining as a camp, leaving and open slot on the wheel.
Second entrance? Another camp?
5) Since frontage space will be limited, we may only have room for theme camps around the village area.
6) However, since we have at least 600' back from the open playa, camping can happen in
the "quiet zone" behind backstage.
Officers:
1) Geo Frey, DigiRob, Anthony, Natalie, Sammy and myself showed up.
2) Sammy has request that all people in the village register on the list.
-Camp heads are requested to have their people register with him: djsacred@earthlink.net
3) Anthony has posted a Leave No Trace policy and it's been received by Burning Man.
4) GeoFrey got together with Randy to find an economical way to built the showers.
5) I was a slacker and didn't get the LNT policy posted on the site, but I did talk to Harley
a) No large scale sound may be on the Esplanade (ie pointing at another camp)
b) No uncontrolled fires can be inside the village
c) Our position allows us assess to the open playa much like being on the Esplanade
d) However, based on the prevailing winds last year, we should have a nice wind block in case of storms.
e) We will be the first village in LSSA, ever...
f) Because we couldn't get frontage, we have 4 streets now and many blocks for parking and camping
g) Also, a burn platform will be moved directly in front of us, and we can extend it for the
burning mandala.
6) Natalie is still looking for DJs and performers, though a basic line-up is in progress.
Tansportation
1) We should easily be able to fill a truck, that can be left in Reno, with burnables.
2) Hopefully, only 3 large trucks will be needed for transport. At least 1 can be one-way.
3) Investigation/reservation needs to commence immediately.
4) Individual water will not be carried on the village trucks. However some public water will be
attained in Reno.
5) Bikes for village members other than the truck drivers will be transported at $20 a bike.
a) To keep costs down, we wish to transport as few bikes as possible.
b) but we wish to make the service available to those that truly need it.
Showers
1) It was decided to have village showers available near camp backstage
2) To lower village registration costs, publicly available shower water will not be provided.
3) However, an easy system for loading personal water will be available.
4) Materials for the showers are available at Orange house
5) Shower construction begins this weekend. Volunteers welcome.
Kitchens
1) No public kitchens will be available. Camps are required to provide their own.
2) However, public dining areas and wash facilities will be available near the showers.
Arches
1) The necessity of consistency of arch size was confirmed through discussion
2) To help prevent waste, arch size was reduced to 8' per block (to fit standard materials size).
3) Inside arch dimensions agreed as a minimum of 8'x6' with 1'-2' thickness.
4) GeoFrey brought up the idea of making the arches a sound sculpture as well.
Community
1) Since we've reduced the village costs, hopefully we can reduce the $100 village admittance fee.
2) Since our costs are essentially fixed, the more people we have, the lower our individual costs.
3) Dream theatre is not interested in building a camp, but are interested in camping with us.
a) decision on non-participatory camps (NPCs) tabled, but seemed amenable
b) work and funding requirements for NPCs undecided.
To do list:
More DJs and performers...
Investigate transportation options.
Gather any scrap materials you see. Report extras to Randy or me.
Get people signed up on the discussion list.
Join in the construction of the showers this weekend.
Get your people to gather.... :)
Next meeting, next Thursday, Orange house, 8pm
