LNT policy
|
Even though the LAFC camp, InCompeCare, this year will be smaller than previous years, we will carry a long tradition of LNT.
First, LNT begins long before the playa. All members are trained in waste reduction, Moop Management, grey water reclamation, etc. Particularly, new members are schooled at outdoor raves in cleanup, not letting cigarettes hit the ground, water management, etc. Zip lock bags are provided to those who want them to assist in dust management and bulk waste reduction (ie. split a large bag of chips into smaller ziplocks)
Onsite we take several precautions
-=Moop=-
- Costumes and decorations are checked for Moop content (feathers, glitter, etc) and bagged if found to be a hazard.
- No large table spaces are allowed. Loose storage of items are to be kept in a tent or vehicle.
-=Trash=-
- 3 large, secured, collection containers are maintained. The papers and burnables are emptied as needed into a public burn pit. The recyclables are taken to center camp for donation. And the trash is packed out, first cars out take as much as we can stuff to avoid overloading the last cars out. Trash is then re-distributed back to where it came from or taken all the way home.
-=Grey Water=-
- Large scale kitchens are discouraged. Typically campers eat soup from cans and recycle the cans or they'll use foil wrapped foods (tasty bites) and pack out the waste. Utensils are wiped clean and disinfected before storing, without water.
- Shower water is evaporated and the sludge is packed out. Any unevaporated water is packed out and disposed of septically.
-=Misc=-
- Sometime, some things, particularly food, hits the ground. In those cases campers are instructed to pick up and remove all dropped items immediately.
-=Packing out=-
- As each camper leaves they are required to perform a sweep of their tent and vehicle area both before and after moving from their spot(s). This sweep is a back and forth motion about every foot, covering more than their area. Last person(s) out of the area are required to perform a complete camp sweep.
